violent-phenomena-21-essays-on-translation

Author(s) : Kavita Bhanot, Jeremy Tiang

Publisher : Tilted Axis Press

“Supported by the National Centre for Writing, Arts Council England and the Jan Michalski Foundation as part of Visible Communities, a National Centre for Writing project.”

Frantz Fanon wrote in 1961 that ‘Decolonisation is always a violent phenomenon,’ meaning that the violence of colonialism can only be counteracted in kind. As colonial legacies linger today, what are the ways in which we can disentangle literary translation from its roots in imperial violence? Twenty-four writers and translators from across the world share their ideas and practices for disrupting and decolonising translation.

THE AUTHOR(S):

Kavita Bhanot is ECR Leverhulme Fellow at Leicester University. She wrote the landmark essay ‘Decolonise not Diversify’ in 2015. She has edited three short-story collections, including Too Asian, not Asian Enough and Book of Birmingham, and co-founded the Literature Must Fall collective and festival, with whom she organises reading groups and events. She is an editor with Media Diversified, for whom she curates essays under Literature Must Fall. Kavita is writing a book with Pluto Press on Literature Must Fall as a new paradigm for reading and writing and is co-editing, with Jeremy Tiang, Violent Phenomena: 21 Essays on Translation. Her translation of short stories by Anjali Kajal won a 2021 Pen Translates award and will be published by Comma Press (2022). She won third prize in the 2018 SI Leeds Literary Prize. For the last ten years, she has been a reader and mentor with The Literary Consultancy, with whom she runs workshops with publishers on political/ethical editing.

Jeremy Tiang is a Singaporean writer, translator, and playwright, based in New York City. He has translated more than ten books from Chinese, including novels by Zhang Yueran, Yeng Pway Ngon and Chan Ho-Kei, and is the recipient of a PEN/Heim Grant, an NEA Literary Translation Fellowship, and a People’s Literature Prize Mao-Tai Cup for Translation. He has also translated plays by Wei Yu-Chia, Zhan Jie and Xu Nuo. His own plays include Salesman之死, The Last Days of Limehouse and A Dream of Red Pavilions (adapted from the novel by Cao Xueqin), and he is the author of a short story collection (It Never Rains on National Day, shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize 2015) and a novel (State of Emergency, Epigram Books, 2017). One of the most acclaimed and active translators into English, he was recently honoured as the London Book Fair’s inaugural Translator in Residence.

so-distant-from-my-life

Author(s) : Monique Ilboudo, Yarri Kamara

Publisher : Tilted Axis Press

To deter me, my uncle spoke to me about roots. A line of argument that I found absurd. Even plants are intelligent enough to grow around stones, seeking the best soil for their roots underground.

Jeanphi, a young man from the fictional West African city Ouabany, has one obsession that will determine the fate of his life - migration. He scrapes together money to take the illegal route across the Sahara, making it as far as Morocco before being repatriated. Increasingly desperate, Jeanphi meets an elegant French widower who for his part is despairing at the insurmountable bureaucratic hurdles for his charitable endeavour in Jeanphi’s country. A window opens to opportunity - but it will also bring tragedy.

Burkinabé author Monique Ilboudo’s novel offers a compelling and complex portrait of migration, one of the defining global concerns of the twenty-first century, and a sharp critique of both the NGO-isation of African countries and the currents of shame that divide communities and families. Yarri Kamara has rendered Ilboudo’s text in an idiom that conveys the sharp humour, lucid descriptions and urgency of the original.

THE AUTHOR(S):

Monique Ilboudo is a Burkinabe writer, activist and academic whose work focuses on the promotion of women’s rights and citizenship. She is a regular newspaper contributor, known in particular for her column Féminin pluriel (1992-1995) which addressed the situation of women in her country. Her first novel, Le Mal de Peau (1992) won a national prize in Burkina Faso. She has also held political office as both a minister and ambassador.

In 2015 she returned to teaching law at Thomas Sankara University (Ouagadougou) and reconnected with her passion for writing. Her last novel, Carrefour des veuves, (Ed. Les Lettres Mouchetées, 2020) was awarded the Prix littéraire des droits de l’Homme à titre étranger, Paris, 2021 and was a finalist for the Orange Book Prize in Africa 2021.

joshua-weissman-an-unapologetic-cookbook

Author(s) : Joshua Weissman

Publisher : DK

A Weissman once said…

“…can we please stop with the barrage of 2.3 second meals that only need 1 ingredient? I get it…we’re busy. But let’s refocus on the fact that beautifully crafted burgers don’t grow on trees.”

Ironically this sounds a lot like he’s trying to convince you to cook, but he’s really not. Is this selling the cookbook? The point is that the food in this book is an invitation that speaks for itself. Great cooking does, and should, take time. Now is the time to double down and get your head in the cooking game. Or you know, don’t. Maybe get someone else to cook this stuff for you…that works too.

How can you know if something is your favorite if 50 to 80 percent of the stuff you’ve been eating was made by someone else? Butter, condiments, cheese, pickles, patties, and buns. For a superior and potentially even life-changing experience, you can (and should, to be honest) make these from scratch. Create the building blocks necessary to make the greatest meal of your life.

While you’re at it, give it the Joshua Weissman-or your own-twist. As Joshua would say, “If you don’t like blue cheese, then don’t use blue cheese.” From simple staples to gourmet to deep-fried, you are the master of your own kitchen, and you’ll make it all, on your terms.

With no regrets, excuses, or apologies, Joshua Weissman will instruct you how with his irreverent humor, a little bit of light razzing, and over 100 perfectly delectable recipes.

If you love to host and entertain; if you like a good project; if you crave control of your food; if fast food or the frozen aisle or the super-fast-super-easy cookbook keep letting your tastebuds down; then Joshua Weissman: An Unapologetic Cookbook is your ideal kitchen companion.

THE AUTHOR(S):

Joshua Weissman isn’t your average culinary genius. He’s chef-y, he’s eccentric, and he’s a lot over-the-top in everything he does-from curating energetic and engaging food entertainment, to constantly developing his massive repertoire of original recipes, to cooking everything (seriously, everything) from scratch.

He has an abounding love of food and proper technique. After nearly a decade of cooking professionally, his passion has been fueled by working with some of the greatest fine dining restaurants in the south-central region of the US. He notably cooked at the James Beard Award-winning restaurant Uchiko, where he spent time focusing on the finest details of cuisine, training other cooks and chefs, and diving deep into the territory of precise Japanese cookery and fermentation.

Joshua can be seen chopping it up for millions of fans on his popular Youtube channel, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. He currently resides in Texas and plans to push the world of food farther than it has ever gone before.

too-flexible-to-feel-good

Author(s) : Celeste Pereira, Bridges Adell

Publisher : Victory Belt Publishing

Are you overly flexible or double-jointed? Perhaps you are the clumsy and tired person in your group of friends, often nursing an injury of some sort. If you are nodding in agreement with raised eyebrows and a knowing smirk on your face, then there is a chance you are hypermobile.

Hypermobility affects a whopping 10 to 25 percent of the population (meaning it’s more common than being left-handed, standing over six feet tall, or having a third nipple), and it can cause symptoms ranging from minor discomfort to debilitating pain.

Hypermobile people’s bendiness and tendency toward anxiety often lead them to yoga, where they find that they are at last praised for their physical ability and given tools to manage their hypersensitivity. However, the way yoga is taught frequently leaves this population susceptible to severe injuries, and they end up being told by medical professionals to avoid yoga.

In this epic new book, fitness experts Adell Bridges and Celest Pereira redefine how to manage hypermobility, providing a practical roadmap that will enable you to harness your bendiness and feel fantastic. They reinforce the importance of stability, correct posture, and a healthy lifestyle, showing how, if managed properly, hypermobility is not debilitating, but a superpower that you can use to live an extraordinary life. Too Flexible to Feel Good teaches you how to adapt your everyday habits such as your biomechanics and your diet to support and nourish your flexible body.

This book also features:

Practical tips on how to hold your body for optimal results during training

Tools to help build awareness of your joint position in everyday life

Strategies for busting anxiety

Exercises that can improve your biomechanics

Diet and sleep considerations

Too Flexible to Feel Good is also an invaluable resource for yoga teachers, fitness instructors, and medical professionals, helping them develop a deeper understanding of how best to help this population.

THE AUTHOR(S):

Celest Pereira is deep down (or maybe not so deep) a Geek that loves anatomy and biomechanics. She miraculously acquired her BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 2009, despite dropping out of school at 16. The bonus of this, is that she knows how to explain complex concepts and make them easy to grasp and digestible. After a workshop with her, you’ll know so much more than just your ass from your elbow :) Her biggest passion is movement, and has been since she was little, but she strongly believes life is too short not to have fun along the way. So although her yoga sessions will challenge you, they will also be a chance to make new friends, laugh and relax. Still, you should bring a towel.

Adell Bridges. Adell’s childhood was spent training and competing as a gymnast, where even then she was referred to as a “more elegant than powerful” gymnast. Bendy rather than strong was how she would always describe her movement abilities. At age 19, Adell moved to Wales where she studied in psychology and later received a master’s degree in creative writing. Like many graduates, Adell spent several years bouncing from job to job and feeling generally unfulfilled and uncertain of her purpose. When she discovered yoga at age 28, everything changed. Taking her foundation teacher training near Dharamsala, India, Adell went on to travel to over 30 countries, teaching and sharing her love of yoga, and continuing to train and learn about anatomy and biomechanics, a subject for which she feels an unquenchable thirst. Adell says her job isn’t to tell others what to do, but to educate others so they know what to do themselves. Her vision behind everything that she shares is to encourage deeper understanding of the self. She believes that by encouraging each individual to understand their own unique experience of movement, breathing, and living in general, the student becomes their own teacher.
